Much as I like getting new and second hand camera gear, I've recently started asking myself what do you actually need. Prime lenses, zoom lenses, fast glass, image stabiliser, film, digital, mirrorless, flash, remote flash, colour, black and white... there's so much to choose from.
What I've realised looking through my photos though is the thing that has really developed is my skill. I'm much better at framing, managing depth of field, and finding abstracts than before. I've also got faster at editing which is important with a backlog of family photos to manage.
Over the years I've acquired quite a bit of all-of-the-above, not generally the latest or best, but mainly in that keen amateur niche.
As I look forward to the new year and hopefully the chance to travel a bit more freely, I like being able to choose what I want to use for a particular type of photography, rather than having to choose the type of photography to match what I have.
